Defence Housing Australia’s residential development ‘Bluewattle’ is helping to build futures in Rasmussen, proudly supporting Gtec’s Building Our Future program to create a community garden at the Upper Ross Community Centre.
Officially opened last weekend, the community garden was built by 20 young Indigenous people over 12 weeks. During this time not only were participants given the opportunity to receive qualifications they learnt valuable work and life skills that will help them gain employment. After just two weeks in the program, nine of the 20 participants have been offered a job.
The community garden will be a wonderful new asset available for anyone to use. The local community are welcome to plant and harvest in the garden, as well as take part in regular workshops about gardening, cooking and nutrition—all hosted by the Upper Ross Community Centre.
The Building Our Future program gives participants an opportunity to experience a range of different aspects to the construction industry. During the program, each participant can achieve certificates in First Aid, Work Safely in the Construction Industry (White Card), Work Safely at Heights and a Certificate I in Construction.
