The sod was officially turned today for Defence Housing Australia’s (DHA) new apartment and commercial space in the heart of Fremantle’s East End.
The name of the development, “Liv Apartments” was also unveiled at this morning’s on-site event to mark the start of construction and first excavation works.
The name “liv” is the Danish word for life, it is derived from the Old Norse “lif” which means shelter or protection. The contemporary architecture of the apartments which features vertical lines, solid shapes and choice of neutral colours, echoes the minimalism and functionality of Scandinavian design.
DHA’s Acting Managing Director, Jan Mason, and Chairman, Sandy Macdonald, shared the official honours at the historic 4,754sqm site on Queen Victoria Street.
Speaking at the event, Ms Mason described the project as one which would deliver long-lasting benefits to the current and future residents of Fremantle.
‘I am delighted to officially mark the commencement of construction of this landmark residential and commercial development in the heart of Fremantle’s up-and-coming East End,’ Ms Mason said.
Liv apartments is a multi-storey development comprising 166 apartments and at least five commercial operations, including one restaurant.
When complete the development will become home to approximately 300 people, including private residents and Defence members.
It will also feature an expansive courtyard, helping to create more useable public open space in this up-and-coming area, which is currently experiencing a raft of new investment.
