How to access and correct information about you

What can I access about me?

The Australian Privacy Act gives you the right to access your personal information.

To find out what personal information we may hold about you and how we use this information, you can go to our Privacy policy.

Your right to access your personal information is not absolute.

Where your information may cojoined with another person’s information, we may refuse access under some circumstances.

You also do not have the right under the Privacy Act to request non-personal information, such as commercial material.

How do I correct my information if it is incorrect?

The Australian Privacy Act also gives you the right to request us to correct your personal information, if you believe it is inaccurate, out-of-date, incomplete, irrelevant or misleading.

We may not be always able to make the requested change because special considerations apply to Commonwealth records. These can only be destroyed or altered in accordance with the Archives Act 1983 (Archives Act). Where your information is conjoined with another person’s information, we may also be unable to make the requested change.

If we are not able to make the requested change, we will tell you why in writing, and we will take reasonable steps to put a note about your request on the relevant record.

You also do not have the right under the Privacy Act to request correction of non-personal information, such as commercial material.

How do I access, or request correction of, my information?

Email privacy@dha.gov.au with the specific details or your request.

In addition, anyone can make a request for information or correction by phone. If you are a member, lessor or contractor you can also find information about you on the Online Services Portal.

Online Services enables you as members, lessors, or suppliers, to self-serve and access information.

Any registered user can access and download information quickly by clicking the Online Services button at the top of any DHA website page.

Be ready to verify your identity and clearly identify the information or documents you are seeking.

Can other people request access, or correction of, my information on my behalf?

Generally, only you or another person you have authorised, such as a legal guardian or authorised agent, can make the request.

We may ask for confirmation of identity and other documentation before we provide any personal information.
